Het laatste weekend van juni zat ik op vogeleiland de Kreupel, voor de vierde keer. Ik was niet helemaal fit en heb niet veel gefotografeerd, maar ik heb met volle teugen genoten. Vanaf het dak van de keet midden op het eiland was het weer een spektakel, dit jaar broeden er 7000 paar Visdief, 8000 paar Kokmeeuw en 3000 paar Aalscholvers! Ik wilde de bewegelijkheid en vrijheid van een individuele vogel vastleggen en dan het liefst gebruik makend van tegenlicht, iets wat ik vaak doe. Het vergde veel van mijn concentratie en vermogen om met de hand scherp te stellen, want in dit licht en met 1000mm laat ook de AF van mijn 1DMkIII het afweten. Maar deze Visdief liet zich uiteindelijk wel pakken, ik heb de foto wel wat moeten croppen voor de juiste compositie.

The last weekend of June, I was visiting the bird-island de Kreupel, for the fourth consecutive time. I wasn’t completely fit and I did not take many photos, I enjoyed it nonetheless. From the top of the roof of a small cabin I could witness the spectacle of 7000 pair of Common terns, 8000 pairs of Black-headed gulls and 3000 pairs of Cormorants! I was aiming for capturing the agility and freedom of a single bird, preferably making use of a back-lit situation, something I often do. It took a toll from my concentration and my ability to focus with the hand, as in this little light and while using 1000mm even the AF of my 1DMkIII couldn’t cope. Eventually this Common tern was captured, which resulted after some cropping in this portrait.
