At last the rivers were suffering from a severe high water. Since 2002 it had not been so high, when we had to row to and from our former house ‘De Wolfswaard’. Now the road to the Blauwe Kamer just remained above the highest level of the river, only ten centimeters! However, it resulted in spectacular landscapes and some fine animals: a couple of beavers used the roadsides as an alternative for their inundated lodges (more about the beavers in my next blog). Because additionally it was a full moon, I went out for some ‘moonscapes’. The nice thing about these images is the totally different light compared to sunlit landscapes. Moreover, the long shutter speed blurs any movement, as is the case with the clouds in this photo. I like these kind of mystical photos, with a monochrome character.

Voor de natuur is deze winter een strenge, in meerdere opzichten. Niet alleen koude en sneeuw maken het voor plant en dier een opgave om te overleven…..ook de politiek heeft de toon gezet voor een lange lange winter…….. Niet gezegend met een lange termijn visie en in onwetendheid zet de politiek een streep door het zo hard bevochten herstel van onze natuur. Als er iets is dat een lange termijn visie en beleid nodig heeft, dan is het wel natuur. Investeringen die nu gedaan worden hebben soms pas over een eeuw effect. Ondertussen moeten we zorgen dat in de tussenliggende periode geen soorten uitsterven, totdat er een duurzame basis is voor het voortbestaan van onze ecosystemen. Vergelijk het met een lekke badkuip die langzaam leegloopt, waar beetje bij beetje de lekkages gedicht worden. Er is een nieuw bad in aanbouw, maar plots trekt iemand de stop eruit….en alles is voor niets. Uiteindelijk maken wij ook deel uit van deze planeet en zijn we afhankelijk van onze natuurlijke omgeving. Ik vond een prachtige voordracht van Frans Lanting die dit met zijn beelden kracht bij zet, neem even de tijd en kijk hier. Ik kan geen mooiere nieuwjaarsboodschap bedenken.

For nature this is a severe winter, in many ways. Not only cold and snow put plants and animals to the test…..politics have announced a long long winter…….Not blessed with any long term vision and in ignorance the politicians cease the restoration of nature that was so hard fought for. Especially nature needs a long term vision en policy. Investments that are done now might have effect only after a century. In the mean time we have to take care no more species get extinct until the restoration provides a sustainable base for existence. One can compare it to a punctured bathtub slowly loosing water, but where the holes are gradually fixed. Meanwhile a new bathtub is constructed. However, someone takes out the plug…and everything has been in vain. In the end we are part of this planet and we depend on our natural environment. I found a beautiful seminar by Frans Lanting enforcing this vision with his images. Take a little time and watch this. I could not have thought of any other new years message.
