Great quiet heathland

The general public associate military training areas with noise, dust, shooting and tanks. This is only a small part of the picture. The activities are not daily, sometimes only a few days a year, and they do not take place in the whole area. From my experience I can say dat generally some 20% of the surface of an area is used frequently, the rest is buffer or nature reserve. During my census work I have few encounters with training military personnel. Even military training areas are truly ‘great quiet heathlands’.
